FOOD SECURITY
The USDA states that:
Food security for a household means access by all members at all times to enough food for an active, healthy life. Food security includes at a minimum (1) the ready availability of nutritionally adequate and safe foods, and (2) an assured ability to acquire acceptable foods in socially acceptable ways (that is, without resorting to emergency food supplies, scavenging, stealing, or other coping strategies).
As an urban farm, New Roots tries to establish food security in the surrounding community by growing organic produce that is accessible to low income families. The North City Market is an outlet for New Roots to provide vegetables to the community at affordable rates. Vouchers for the market are distributed weekly to food banks in the area. Sometimes food from the farm is directly donated to the St. Liborious food bank located next door. An important part of the farm’s mission is to secure enough produce for the community in a sustainable manner.
