Field Trips and Farm Tours

Field Trips
If you know a class of eager kids, consider participating in one of our interactive tours! We offer field trips for children age 5 to 16. We currently have two teachers on our staff that have developed children's farm curriculum. All field trips begin with a discussion on "why a farm in the city?" where we discuss where food comes from, grocery stores, old city lots and how to build a farm in the city (not with a tractor!), the importance of nutrients and a healthy environment for both plants and people, and current environmental issues. Children then participate in an interactive farm tour where they will taste all sorts green delights, feed chickens, and see worms at work. As far as programming, we are willing to work with your ideas for your group. Some groups work on murals, others paint greenhouses, some harvest and wash vegetables, build new vegetable beds, plant zucchini, etc. Children can also harvest from the garden and cook their own lunch in our outdoor kitchen.* Just let us know before hand.

Farm tour and basic educational activities: $5 per child

Farm tour, basic activities and farm lunch: $8 per child

Every year we will offer scholarships to groups located in the city that cannot afford program costs. Please contact us at info@newrootsurbanfarm.org if your school, church, summer group would like to participate but cannot pay the program fee.

We require a minimum of two weeks notice for any field trip. Contact us now to bring your group!

Farm Tours
We also offer tours for groups of adults. A tour includes a discussion on the history of New Roots, urban sustainability and food security, the social and environmental impacts of our current food system and alternative approaches, a brief overview of New Roots current programs and food security initiatives, urban agriculture techniques and how to build raised beds, and information on how to get involved in your community. And, of course, we'll show you around!

Tour cost: $5 per person

*We ask that groups that can pay for programming, do pay for programming. In offering the farm as an educational resource for the greater community, we are then able to fund programs that directly support our immediate neighborhoods and the food needs that exist in North City.
