Neighborhood youth can become farmers! This year, we are accepting 15 youth from the St. Louis Place and Old North St. Louis neighborhoods to participate in our apprenticeship program. Kids come to the farm on Tuesdays and Fridays 9am-1pm. We spend the morning harvesting vegetables, planting, washing and weighing harvested vegetables, and other farm chores as needed. At noon the apprentices help cook lunch using vegetables harvested that day, utilizing our fulling stocked outdoor kitchen. We end the day with a meal and discussion on food, nutrition, 2nd grade worries, neighborhood activities, etc.

We use the farm as an outdoor classroom to teach each other about plant and insect identification, environmental issues, and the need for good nutrition. Children who participate go back to school in the fall with a better understanding of where food comes from and how to grow and cook fresh foods. We’ve found that children who actively participate in growing and harvesting their food have an overall enthusiasm towards eating healthy foods. If your child would like to participate in this program, please email at info@newrootsurbanfarm.org.
